Why Vitamin D?
Extra vitamin D isn’t only beneficial in the autumn and winter; in the spring and summer too the amount produced by our bodies can be insufficient. The sun is the main trigger of vitamin D production in the skin, but nowadays we expose ourselves less to the sun. We sit indoors too often, and protect our bodies against the sun with sunscreen and clothes. Even wearing sunglasses significantly inhibits the body’s production of vitamin D.

And this whilst sunlight is the main source of vitamin D for humans. In the event of sufficient exposure to ultraviolet radiation, the amount produced by the body– which takes place in the skin – is many times higher than the amount that can be obtained from food. On a beautiful summer’s day, the body can produce around 250 mcg of vitamin D. This doesn’t mean that you should sit outdoors in the blazing midday sun during the hottest part of the day. It is, of course, advisable to be sensible with exposure to strong sunlight and to avoid being burned by the sun. Even if you remain in the shade, your body will still produce vitamin D, as it will on a cloudy day.

Vitamin D3 is important for the body because it plays a role in many processes:

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal teeth

Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system

In the event of the absence, or avoidance of, sunlight, vitamin D is an essential nutrient. It is increasingly important to obtain sufficient vitamin D from external sources. Vitamin D can be found in our food. Fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, contain vitamin D3, but unfortunately that barely covers the amount needed. A food supplement containing vitamin D3 may then provide a solution.

The benefits of Bonusan Vitamin D3 25 mcg
At 25 mcg (1000 international units (IU)), this vitamin D supplement is a powerful supplement to the daily vitamin D intake. Bonusan Vitamin D3 soft gel capsules are a firm favourite; because of their small, round shape, they are easy to swallow. Also, they do not contain any unnecessary additives and no omega-6 fatty acids. We therefore prevent this from adversely affecting the omega-3:omega-6 ratio.

Bonusan vitamin D3 is available in various doses of soft gel capsules (15 mcg and 25 mcg) and in drops, for flexible dosing. This enables the dosage to be tailored to the daily requirement.

High quality thanks to a fat matrix of olive oil
We only use vitamin D3 in our products. This is much more effective in increasing vitamin D levels than D2. Vitamin D3 is up to ten times more powerful than vitamin D2. In terms of absorbability, it is important that vitamin D is dissolved in an oil base. That is because, unlike many other vitamins, vitamin D is not water soluble. Our vitamin D3 is therefore dissolved in extra virgin olive oil.

Bonusan vitamin D3 products are derived from lanolin in sheep’s wool. To produce vitamin D3 from sheep’s lanolin, the sheep is first sheared. The wool is cooked which melts the lanolin and it separates from the wool. The cholesterol-like substances, which contain the vitamin D3, then separate from the fat. Radiation with UV light results in conversion into vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 from lanolin is suitable for people with a vegetarian lifestyle. For vegans, Bonusan Algae Oil is a good alternative; to produce this we use vitamin D3 from plant-based lichens.

Suitable for maintaining the health
Vitamin D3 25 mcg is one of the most frequently purchased basic supplementation products in the Bonusan range. The soft gel capsules can also be combined with other supplements that contain vitamin D, such as a multivitamin or cod liver oil.

Young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with a darker or mulatto skin colour require more vitamin D than can be obtained from sunlight and food. Not everyone requires the same amount, which is why, at Bonusan, we have different vitamin D3 supplements, all with specific benefits. As well as the 25 mcg, Bonusan’s range includes soft gel capsules containing 15 mcg and drops for flexible dosing. The drops can easily be added to all sorts of foods, meaning they are also suitable for young children and people who prefer not to swallow soft gel capsules.

All of our vitamin D3 products are derived from lanolin in sheep’s wool, and are therefore not suitable for vegans. They are, however, suitable for vegetarians.
